April 12, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports by a Los Angles personal injury attorney, five people were killed in a crash on Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles.
According to the California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz the accident occurred at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Sunday when a man was killed after his red Mazda pickup struck the center divider on the rain slick roads. The pickup truck after hitting the center divider overturned on the freeway in the Newhall Pass area.
The man has been identified as 54 year old Jon Backburn of Frazier Park, this accident is also the cause of another vehicle to crash killing four children according to the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle, a Nissan Altima was driven by Francisco Enciso age 25, who was transported to Providence Holy Cross Hospital with major injuries. The Altima crashed into the pickup and was then struck by a Chevrolet Suburban.
The children have been identified by the California Highway Patrol as Cynthia Hernandez age 9, Edgar Hernandez age 8, Xochitl Hernandez age 5, and Luis Villegas age 12. The children’s mother of the three children, also in the Nissan Jessica Milan age 27 was taken to Henry Mayo with major injuries.
Officer Lutz stated that the accident approximately 25 miles north of Los Angeles is under investigation, with rain as a contributing factor, but there also could have been unsafe speed or mechanical problems involved causing the accident.
The accident caused the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 to be closed for about nine hours after the accident according to California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the Antelope Valley Freeway and Newhall Pass junction in the southbound lanes and was reported at approximately 12:14 a.m.
