Three Santa Barbara Fatalities After Gravel Truck Hits a House
August 24, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports a fully loaded gravel truck veered off the highway striking a house and killing three people.
The gravel truck, a double tractor-trailer was fully loaded when it left the highway in Santa Barbra killing a man, child and woman in the house it struck.
The tractor trailer was on Highway 154 in the vicinity of a 101 Freeway overpass when it collided with four other vehicles. This caused the gravel truck to end up going down a driveway and crash into a house the three people were in that were killed.
According to authorities the house was in the 4100 block of State Street and firefighters pronounced the man and woman dead at the scene of the crash. The child was found dead after an approximate hour of searching the home. The identity of the victims has not been released.
Originally fire officials believed there was a fourth victim, but a neighbor stated the person had left the home on a bicycle prior to the crash. Officials then determined there were three victims that were killed in the home.
The driver of the truck sustained minor facial injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol believes the breaks on the truck might have failed and crews used a vacuum truck to clear the gravel from the home.

California 200 Accident Fatal for Eight People to be Probed by Federal Officials
August 18, 2010 ( by Horatio Algren) According to reports California officials have begun investigating the California 200 off road race accident that killed eight people.
A permit for the California 200 was issued to the organizer by the Bureau of Land Management, which has jurisdiction over the land the race was held on. The bureau of Land Management has been cooperating with authorities investigating the accident and states they will issue information as it becomes available.
There have been questions about the safety of the race and the company sponsoring the event told federal officials that two men were responsible for coordinating medical emergency response. The men have now stated to the Los Angeles Times they were not assigned to respond to medical emergencies.
The BLM released the permit documents for the California 200 event and named to be contacted in case of a medical emergency was Dave Hatcher an Arcadia resident, a volunteer for MDR, which is based in South El Monte. Hatcher has stated he has been involved in past events, but was managing the 30 mile checkpoint for the Saturday race.
The other person to contact for emergency response was Jim Williams, which has not made a comment and Patricia Williams the primary contact for MDR Productions has refused to comment on the accident.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Joaquin Zubieta stated that six people were killed at the scene of the crash and nine other people had to be airlifted from the scene. Two of the people airlifted from the scene of the crash later died at the hospital.
There have been seven people that died in the California 200 crash identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office; Danica Frantzich of Las Vegas, Andrew Therrin age 22 of Riverside, Anthony Sanchez age 23, of Escondido, Brian Wolfin age 27 of Escondido, Zachary Freeman age 24 of Ventura, Aaron Farkas age 25 of Escondido, and Dustin C. Malson age 24 of Ventura.
According to the MDR website the spectators at the California 200 event should be at least 100 feet from the racing cars and videos of earlier events show spectators were closer than the suggested 100 feet.
Investigators are planning to review footage from the camera attached to the truck involved in the crash, whose driver has been identified as 28 year old Brett M. Sloppy of San Marcos. Sloppy lost control of the vehicle after racing up a spot known as the rock pile, where there are spectators each year.
According to authorities Sloppy was accompanied from the scene of the crash by officers, because the crowd was shouting at the racer. He was not arrested and alcohol did not play a part in the racing crash.
