More Than 400,000 Chevy Cruzes Being Recalled by Auto Maker for Potential Fire Risk
June 22, 2012 - According to reports GM is recalling 413,418 Chevy Cruzes for a defect that could trap spilled oil or leak hydraulic fluid causing a fire risk.
The recall involves all Chevy Cruzes that were built in the United States between September 2010 and May 2012, the auto maker said. The recall comes after a preliminary investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The problem that was found can occur during oil changes, if oil is spilled or dripped. It can become trapped by the engine shield and cause a fire risk. Another issue that has been found is vehicles with manual transmissions, if driven with a worn clutch can cause burning hydraulic fluid to squirt from the clutch housing. The flaming fluid can ignite the engine shield and cause an engine compartment fire.
A spate action that involves the Chevy Cruzes, at least 249 of the vehicles have incomplete welds and GM dealers are to inspect the welds in the rear compartment.
